6. Case Studies

Note: While there would be problems and assignments associated with each section and major sub-section, this is where larger (probably more integrative) case studies would be found. It may be that the first edition of the textbook may not have larger integrative case studies developed for all of these subject areas As well, there has been a suggestion that the case studies could (at least in part) focus on the differences in geographic locations (Europe, South America, North America, Scandinavia, Australasia, Africa and Russia). Can this be done in such a way that it enhances student understanding, rather than confounding it?

  • Harvesting
  • Wood Transportation
  • Roads
  • Stand Establishment and Tending
  • Continuous operations improvement
  • Administration and Support
  • Integrated Operations Management
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Health and Safety
  • Environmental Impact Mitigation

Note: It has been suggested by some that the “Trends in Forest Operations” part of the book be dropped or simply be a set of links to appropriate journals, such as the International Journal of Forest Engineering. For now, I have dropped it from our outline.
